Home Care Technology: Support Between Visits

Home care aides are in a person’s home for set hours, and between visits no one is there. Home care technology fills that gap without cutting visits, and no cameras are required. Any home care or home health agency, in any state or anywhere in the world, can get Vista Enterprise™ with no state approval.

What changes for the person supported?

  • Independence at home. The person keeps their own routines between visits.
  • Privacy. No cameras are required in bedrooms, bathrooms or other personal spaces. The person chooses where devices go.
  • Earlier notice. Changes in routine can show up in plain-language daily reports before they become a crisis.

What changes for the agency and its caregivers?

Caregivers arrive knowing how the night went. Schedulers and nurses see patterns over days instead of one visit at a time. The agency’s own trained team responds and decides, following each person’s plan. VistaLink™ never acts alone.

Vista is not the direct service provider. The home care or home health agency is. Vista Enterprise™ supports the agency’s own team, any case manager or care coordinator, and the person and their family, in following the client rights, privacy and licensing rules that apply to the agency, and in building each person’s plan of care around their own wants and needs. The agency’s own trained team responds and decides.

Is home care technology a way to cut visits?

No. It adds to the visit schedule and does not replace the hands-on help, relationship or judgment a caregiver brings into the room. For Medicare-certified home health agencies, the federal conditions of participation in 42 CFR part 484 still apply in full. Licensing for home care agencies differs by state.

Who responds between visits?

The agency’s own trained team does. A trained staff member reviews each event alongside the person’s plan, reaches out the way the plan says, and decides what happens next, such as a check-in call, a call to a family member named in the plan, or a call to emergency services when the plan says to. VistaLink™ never acts alone.

Who pays for it?

Most agencies get Vista Enterprise™ as their own operating cost, the way they get an EHR or payroll system, with no state approval, in any state or anywhere in the world. Where a state waiver pays for remote support or technology for a person, the person’s plan may cover it; the funding map shows each state. See how Vista Enterprise™ works for agencies.

What does this look like for a home care agency? (composite example)

This is a composite example built from common situations. It is not a real person.

An older man gets a morning and an evening visit from his home care agency and lives alone the rest of the day. With his consent, non-wearable sensors and a display go in his home. One evening his routine looks different, so a trained staff member at the agency calls him, as his plan says. He is fine, and his daughter, who is named in his plan, gets a call to stop by.

What should a home care agency ask before adding technology?

  • Which clients are alone for long parts of the day or night?
  • How will each person give informed consent and say no?
  • Who on our own team receives events, and what does each plan tell them to do?
  • Does a state waiver pay for any of this for our clients?

Questions and answers

What is home care technology?

Technology that supports a person at home between caregiver visits, so they keep their routines and privacy, and the agency’s own trained team can see when something may need attention.

Does home care technology replace caregiver visits?

No. Visits stay as the person’s plan and the agency’s rules set them. Technology fills the time between visits.

Who responds between visits?

The agency’s own trained team responds and decides, following each person’s plan. VistaLink™ never acts alone.

Does the person supported have to agree?

Yes. The person supported decides whether remote support is used and where devices go, with help from the people they choose. It is written into the person’s plan with the agency, and with their case manager or support coordinator if a program such as a Medicaid waiver pays for their services. When the person has a legal guardian or other legal representative, that person takes part in consent as the law allows. Consent is informed, voluntary and written down. The person can say no or change their mind at any time, and consent is revisited whenever the plan changes.

Does it use cameras?

No. No cameras are required in bedrooms, bathrooms or other personal spaces. VistaLink™ uses non-wearable sensors and a display in the home.

Can a Medicare-certified home health agency use it?

Yes. Any agency can get Vista Enterprise™. A Medicare-certified home health agency still follows the federal conditions of participation in full, and whether a service can be billed depends on each program’s rules.
